1.1 Background of the Study
Community policing has been recognized globally as an essential strategy for enhancing public safety, improving community relations with law enforcement, and addressing local crime challenges. In Nigeria, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has witnessed both the successes and challenges of implementing community policing strategies (Musa & Sani, 2023). Films, as powerful cultural tools, have a unique potential to shape public understanding and perceptions of policing, security, and law enforcement practices. In Kwali Local Government Area, where community dynamics and safety concerns are central, films can be leveraged as tools for promoting the values of cooperation between the police and the community (Bello & Abdullahi, 2024).
Films, particularly those with narratives surrounding crime prevention, law enforcement, and community engagement, have been used to portray positive examples of policing that resonate with local communities (Usman, 2023). Recent studies indicate that film can play an effective role in demystifying the role of the police and reinforcing the concept of community participation in maintaining public safety (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While community policing has been advocated for in various parts of Nigeria, the role of film in promoting this strategy remains under-researched, especially in Kwali. Although there are occasional portrayals of police-community partnerships in films, there is little understanding of how such depictions influence local communities’ willingness to engage with police efforts to enhance security. This study explores how films contribute to promoting community policing efforts in Kwali (Alhaji & Musa, 2024).
